New Assistant manager, as Robins get ready for next season. NEWTOWN boss Bernard
McNally is linking-up with one of his former Shrewsbury Town team-mates after the appointment of Carlton Leonard as his assistant. The move follows the decision of Peter Carter to step down from the number two role at Latham Park. "We go back
a long way, we were at Shrewsbury Town together in the early 80s as players," said McNally of the former defender. "He has also been involved with Newtown in the past, and I’m looking forward to working with him next season."
A left-back who hails from Oswestry and played for Llansantffraid in the Welsh Premier between 1994 and 1996, Leonard
played for Shropshire Schools Under-19s while still a 16-year-old and subsequently signed for the Shrews. He made his
debut in 1975 and went on to make 298 appearances in eight years, figuring in the team that finished champions of the old
Third Division (now League One) in 1978-79. Leonard then joined Hereford United in 1983 and then returned to Shrewsbury,
coaching in the Centre of Excellence.
Newtown Youths Contest CWFA Youth Final Newtown Youths v The New Saints Youths Sunday 27th May, 2.30pm KO at Montgomery
David Jarman takes his side to Mongtomery to contest the CWFA Youth Cup Final on
Sunday 27th May and will select from a full squad. The match kicks-off at 2.30pm - good luck to the Youths. Their League campaign stuttered a little last Sunday when unavailability forced
the postponement of their crucial title decider against Penrhyncoch, and their match for tomorrow (Weds) at Llanymynech has
also been postponed. These games have been re-arranged for 2.30pm on Sunday 20th v Llanymynech with the crucial Penrhyncoch
game now taking place away on Tuesday 29th May.
Three Academy Under
14s in Regional Side Bruce Sears and Josh Morris were
proud coaches last week when three of their Under 14s squad were selected for the Central Wales regional squad taking part
in the Cymru Cup in Aberystwyth. Click on the following link http://news.welshfootballtrust.co.uk/news/?p=627 Josh Baldwin, who scored a 25yard power goal, Ryan Sears and Alex
Jones all competed on equal terms in their regional squad as they played North Wales Region, South Wales Region and the Welsh
International side. Only players born in 1998 were eligible to take part in the Cymru Cup which is designed to act as a pathway
for Academy players into the full Welsh international U14s side. Congratulations to all three players.

Wednesday
9th May 2012 Youths Remain on Target for League Title Caersws Youths 1 v 3 Newtown Youth David Jarman's
Under 18 charges remain on course for the Mid Wales Youth League title after beating local rivals Caersws, 3-1 tonight (Weds).
They could not field their strongest team tonight because of exam and work commitments, and they paid an early price by going
1-0 down in the first half. The turn around proved decisive as Newtown came out and equalised courtesy of a Staff Jones strike,
and soon afterwards, Luke Jarman scored the goal that put them 2-1 ahead. With the match still delicately poised, the Robins
needed another goal and it came from Jakob Sharman to put the travelling reds 3-1 ahead. They have a game left against Llanymynech, which they can be expected to win on Tuesday 15th May, but the crucial
game will be on Sunday 13th when the crunch game against Penrhyncoch away takes place. They also have title ambitions themselves,
so the match will be incredibly difficult and it is one Jammy needs his strongest side for. Good luck lads. They are also in the Central Wales FA Youth Cup final which, whilst not confirmed
yet, may take place at Guilsfield on Sunday 20th May.
Monday
7th May 2012 Youths in CWFA Cup Final Waterloo Rovers 0 v 4 Newtown Youths David
Jarman's Under 18s Youth team progressed to the final of the Central Wales FA Cup Final yesterday (Sunday) after completing
their double-legged Semi-final victory against Waterloo Youths. Leading 1-0 from a narrow home victory in the first leg, when
the young Robins could not field their best side, they made up for it on the road to Welshpool after the original date of
29th April was abandoned with both teams on the field when no Referee turned up. Yesterday's 4-0 win was the result of an excellent team performance and goals came from Joe Bell, Joe Evans,
James Price and an absolute screamer from Elliot Jones. Newtown will now wait to hear where and when the Final will be, and
more importantly, if they will have any opponents in the Final. TNS Youths were already through to the Cup final, but they
dramatically withdrew from the Mid-Wales Youth League last week, creating doubt as to whether they will turn out for the Youth
Cup final.
Friday
4th May 2012 Newtown's Premiership Status Saved A last minute repreive for Newtown was achieved tonight with the news that
Taffs Well achieved the result they needed when they won their match against bottom Club, Caerau Ely 5-1. Newtown's Board
of Directors were meeting to discuss plans for next season when the news came through, but there were no excessive celebrations
as Newtown gratefully accept their position in the Welsh Premier League with much humility. Despite some very encouraging
performances over the season and some unlucky defeats, the fact is that we finished 9pts adrift of our nearest rivals and
that is what the Management team will be trying to address during the pre-season period.
The Newtown Board unanimously approved the continued appointment of Manager, Bernie McNally and hope he will remain
as first team coach. Messages of support from the players shows that the majority of the current squad will opt to remain, if selected, which is pleasing
as all agree there is the basis of a very good team at Newtown. The
Board also approved the recommended budget for next season, but there are no new benefactors and the budget remains the same.
This year's AGM will hear all the details, but the financial team, led by Barry Gardner, have made huge strides in reorganising
income and expenditure at the Club and they will report a break-even situation due to the sensible cuts made 12 months ago.
Many thanks to Taffs Well for their success tonight, but with
it go sincere commiserations to Haverfordwest FC who would have been deserved replacements had we been demoted. Club Secretary, Owen Durbridge paid tribute to the dedicated band of volunteers
at Newtown, who, between them all, ensured the club continues to win its Licences each year which has ensured our premiership
status once again.

April 2012 Penalties Let Down Spirited Newtown Performance Afan Lido 3-2 Newtown AFC (after penalties) The
memories of those faithful Newtown supporters who travelled to Aberystwyth today will definitely be the vocal, colourful and
exhuberant support of the wig wearing contingent behind the one goal. There was a constant drum beat, flags, trumpets and
non-stop chants, if some of them were slightly embarrassing and inappropriate. But the support was superb today and so much
stick went the way of the Afan Lido players that at the end of the penalty shoot-out, the entire Lido team turned to return
the abuse on the Newtown fans. The team showed their appreciation by thanking the Newtown section for their excellent support, but in the end, the goalkeepers
were the heroes of the penalty competition. After the first Lido taker had missed alarmingly wide, things looked good for
Newtown, but despite Centre half, Keiren Mills-Evans placing his kick exactly in the corner, the Lido keeper, Craig Morris
dived wide to save it. Lido converted their second, but striker Nick Rushton came on for Newtown, and Morris again made a
good save. It was Nick Thomas' turn to be the goalie hero as he saved Lido's third to put Newtown 1-1 down. Max Penk
and Robbie Millington converted their strikes, but with Lido leading at 3-2, Shane Sutton, who had an immense game in midfield,
struck his penalty into the welcoming arms of Craig Morris which sparked a mass celebration by the Lido wi nners.
Before the penalties, Lido were desperate for the final
whistle as their goal was peppered for the whole of the last half of extra time with a header going agonisingly close from
Shane Sutton, a powerful shot from Nick Rushton followed the same route, and right on the stroke of the final whistle, substitute
Callum Wright spurned the opportunity to slide the ball to an unmarked Robbie Millington on his right, to shoot from 18 yards,
and that too, skimmed the top of the goal. Throughout the first
half, Lido did most of the attacking, but Newtown found some belief in their passing abilities in the second period. Trailing
1-0 to a well taken goal from Lido's Mark Jones on 42 minutes, Newtown finished normal time really strongly and got a
deserved equaliser through Nick Rushton who pounced on a Shane Sutton rebound to power home for 1-1. Many thanks to Aberystwyth for their hospitality and grateful thanks to the colourful
display and vocal support from the Newtown travelling contingent. On the subject of Welsh Premier League survival, Newtown got the news they were
hoping for with Taffs Well getting a 1-1 draw against AFC Porth in the Welsh League. The last Taffs Well game of the season
is on Tuesday night, 1st May when a 2-0 win will be the desired outcome against bottom side Caerau (Ely).
League Cup Final History for Newtown Afan Lido v Newtown AFC
Loyal
Robins supporters travel to Aberystwyth today for an historical League cup final appearance for the Newtown club. Despite
finishing bottom of the table this season, the Robins have been good value for their Welsh Premier League membership, dishing
out defeats to Bangor twice and TNS once and if they learn anything from the league fixtures over the season it will be to
hold onto a lead late in the game, with several matches lost by conceding late goals. Today's cup final appearance comes on the back of a marvellous league cup run, with all their opponents coming
from the top half of the table, where firstly Prestatyn, then some heroic matches against Bangor City, and finally a semi-final
victory against TNS earned them today's reward. They face an Afan Lido side who are in a better league position, but with
perhaps a less content squad with rumours that their Manager is set to leave the Club. The sides have already met four times this season and Newtown have edged those encounters, winning two, losing one
and drawing one. There is little to choose between the two sides on form, but Afan Lido's early mid-season form was outstanding
as they took points off a lot of the big teams, where Newtown failed. Their form has plummeted of late, with Newtown imposing
the biggest of their defeats with a 6-1 victory at Afan Lido. The
match kicks-off at 3.10pm but it is also live on S4C which could affect attendance somewhat. Two coaches have gone with supporters
from Newtown and we can only hope for the rare sunshine to shine on the Robins today. They will be wearing their away strip
of Yellow and Black, having lost the toss of the coin, but Manager Bernie McNally knows his side have the ability to beat
all their Premiership rivals on the day and will be turning up with a full squad to choose from.
Newtown Relegation Avoidence Possible Despite finishing bottom of the Welsh Premier League, Newtown AFC could still be
members of the League next season. Today, the Domestic Licence Appeals Panel refused Neath FC either a Domestic or European
licence which means they are not even eligible to compete in the KOs for the final Europa league spot due to start in a couple
of weeks - and are relegated forthwith. That means the side that finishes 9th in the Premiership could be competing for a
Europa League place with the 6 sides above it (subject to TNS beating Cefn Druids in the Welsh Cup Final). Today's decision, which one can only assume relates to financial irregularities
given the well documented problems Neath have experienced this season, means that Carmarthen are formally excluded from relegation,
having finished 11th. If Haverfordwest now fail to get the runners-up spot in the Welsh League, then Newtown will also be
excluded from relegation. Currently, Cambrian and Clydach FC have been crowned Welsh league champions, whilst Haverfordwest
have concluded their season and currently stand in second spot. If Taffs Well FC get four points and +2 goals from their last
two games, then Newtown, will benefit at the expense of Haverfordwest.
Funeral Arrangements for Jack Blayney Tuesday 1st May, 2012 at 2pm On behalf of
the Blayney family, Newtown AFC can inform its members that the funeral for the late Jack Blayney will be held at All Saints
Church at 2pm on Tuesday 1st May. There will be refreshments provided after the service at Newtown Football Club where all
are welcome. The League have announced that they will have a
minutes silence at the start of the League Cup Final on Saturday as a mark of respect to a man who performed countless years
of voluntary service to Newtown Football Club
Newtown Bow Out with Defeat at Aberystwyth Aberystwyth 3 v 2 Newtown AFC The final league game of the season, and the final league game for Newtown
in the Welsh Premier League after 20 years membership and founder members. Newtown started the match brightly with an early
goal for Shane Sutton in the 10th minute. That was unfortunately cancelled out just two minutes later by a Connor Courtney
own goal and ten minutes later, the lead was conceded to Aberystwyth as they went ahead 2-1. It took three quarters of an
hour for the travelling Robins to claw their way back with Nick Rushton scoring in the 68th minute to restore parity, but
another very controversial own-goal sealed the game for Aberystwyth in the 77th minute when Andy Jones was adjudged to have
put the ball into his own net, but the Robins defence protested loudly that the ball had not crossed the line.
There is still a miniscule chance of Premier League survival for the Robins, despite
finishing 9pts adrift of the pack in bottom place, but the permutations surround the finishing position of Haverfordwest in
the sourthern Welsh League and also the appeal by Neath FC and TNS over their domestic licence refusals. Both clubs were confident
their appeals would be successful. Attention turns to this weekend
now as Newtown prepare to take some silverware from a disappointing season. The League Cup final between Newtown and Afan
Lido takes place at Aberystwyth on Sunday 28th April with a 3.10pm KO. The game is being televised live on S4C, but it is
hoped to take two buses full of supporters to spur the team on. Put your names down in the clubhouse please.
Club Stalwart Passes Away Club Reports Sad Death of Jack Blayney It is with much sadness that Newtown AFC report the news of the passing of Jack Blayney who died in Shrewsbury Hospital yesterday
(Sunday 22nd April). Jack and his wife of 60 years, Rhoda were popular and well known members of the Club and were tireless
volunteers until very recently, having loyally run the refreshment hut at the Club for untold years, annually presenting valuable
funds to the Club from the profits made in serving teas and hot-dugs to all local and visiting supporters.
Jack, who
was 90 years of age, passed peacefully in his sleep only hours after his family had been visiting him in the afternoon at
Shrewsbury hospital where he had been a patient since breaking his leg in a fall at the family home in January. Rhoda and
sons, Roy and Nigel and their grandchildren were daily visitors to Jack who had his usual high spirits right to the end. Jack
will be remembered by many sections of the Town and surrounding villages for the various roles he performed which included
a dinner "man" at Penstrowed school, a firefighter for 25 years, a mobile shopkeeper and probably most notably,
as a vocal and regular supporter at Newtown Football Club where it was impossible to gain entry to Latham Park without buying
a raffle ticket from him. The annual Newtown Carnival was made his own by Jack, and his close friend Brian Rees, who
entertained the whole Town with their costumes every year and the regular procession starting from Canal Road was his favourite
place to "play to the crowd" as all the lorries and entries prepared themselves for the colourful parade. On
behalf of all its members, the Club extends its deepest sympathies to Rhoda and her family.
Further news will
be published in due course once the family have sorted out funeral arrangements.
Buses Booked For Cup Final The Club has booked two coaches for Newtown spectators to travel to Aberystwyth to support The Robins in their inaugural cup final appearance, which is against
Afan Lido on Saturday 28th April. In conjunction with the S4C broadcasters, the League has decided the game will be screened
live with a 3.10pm KO. Supporters can put their names down for the
buses in the clubhouse now.

Messages of Support for Robins'
Relegation Plight Following results last
Saturday which saw Newtown guaranteed to finish in 12th place in the Welsh Premier League, messages of support for the Club
have been received. Haverdfordwest, Port Talbot and Carmarthen all sent messages to the Club wishing us well and the Club
acknowledges their kind words. Two teams are demoted from the
Premiership each season, one replaced by a suitable candidate from the North and one from the Southern league. The Northern
side is confirmed as Connahs Quay who gained their licence to permit entry and have won their league. In the South, things
are still murky, but it appears that no licence holder (only Haverfordwest gained a licence) will finish in the top two positions.
Bridgend are appealing against the licence refusal, but are unlikely to finish second at the moment. This means that 12th
place are assured relegation, but the 11th placed Club, which will be either Carmarthen or Aberystwyth, may escape relegation
if no team comes from the South. All of the above assumes that the remaining ten teams in the Premiership gain their licences.
At the moment, the two full time clubs, TNS and Neath were refused licences. Only those Clubs know the reasons for their failure
but both have issued press statements to express confidence in turning the decision around on appeal. The Appeal's Body
meet on Friday 27th April to make a decision on all the appeals entered.
Death of Former Manager Former Newtown player and Manager, Carl Edwards of Rhayader passed away suddenly
aged 72yrs last Saturday. Carl was Manager of the Newtown side in the late sixties, early seventies and was also well known
as a teacher at Newtown High School. A keen walker, Carl also organised the popular Across Wales Walk before the Rotary Club
took over responsibility. The Club sends its sympathies to Carl's family.
