There are EIGHT local players at Newtown at the moment, a testament to the Board of Directors’ policy to increase the local involvement wherever possible and to fit in with their Community Strategy, a significant part of which is the recruitment and production of locally based players that the community can identify with. Another part of that policy is player-retention to assist with the same aspect of community identification and that the vast majority of last year’s team have been retained.

Club Chairman, Elwyn Preece paid tribute to the Management team who have taken the Board’s wishes into account when selecting players for trials and said he was pleased that several local players have had the determination and ability to show themselves worthy of Welsh Premier League squad selection ahead of the new season and looked forward to them playing their part in what we anticipate will be a successful season for the Club.

Manager - Bernard McNally

Newtown AFC Manager Bernard McNally

FORMER Northern Ireland international midfielder Bernard McNally, who holds the Uefa Pro Licence, was appointed manager of Newtown in June 2011 following the sudden departure of Darren Ryan.

After a distinguished club career with Shrewsbury Town and West Bromwich Albion, scoring 33 goals from 435 Football League appearances, McNally then went on to play for Hednesford Town and Telford United, later managing both clubs.

His five caps for Northern Ireland included a place in the 1986 World Cup squad.

A native of Shrewbury, McNally was a key member of the Gay Meadow side that established themselves as Second Division regulars during the mid-80s. His £385,000 move to WBA in 1989 followed talks with both Stoke City and Sunderland and he was voted Albion's player of the season in his one and only season at the Hawthorns. McNally then featured in Hednesford's 1996/7 FA Cup run which saw them beaten 3-2 by Middlesbrough in the fourth round at the Riverside Stadium. He was appointed the first-ever manager of phoenix club AFC Telford United in 2004 and led the Bucks to the play-offs, where they beat Kendal Town 2-1. But, after the club struggled in the Northern Premier League, McNally was sacked and has since managed Indian club Pune FC. In September 2009 he was appointed as caretaker manager of Southern League Premier Division side Hednesford but, after being confirmed in the role on a permanent basis, he parted with the Keys Park outfit a year later.
