PREVIEW: Mid Wales derby

Aberystwyth Town the visitors to Latham Park

JD Welsh Premier League action returns to Latham Park on Saturday in the form of the Mid Wales derby.

Nev Powell brings his Aberystwyth side to take on the Robins for the first time he took over in the summer.

Both clubs have undergone changes over the summer, and will be looking to kick start the opening to their seasons with a win.

Here is how the two sides stack up heading into the game.

SEASON SO FAR

Newtown - After going three games unbeaten, last weeks defeat to Barry Town was a hugely disappointing one for the Robins.

The Robins have showed good signs this season that they can gel and evolve into a side that compete for the top six.

After the defeat last week, they sit in eighth place and will be looking for three points on Saturday which could see them jump to sixth.

Aberystwyth - So far it has been a disappointing start to Nev Powell's reign at Park Avenue. A controversial goal handed them an opening day point at Barry Town.

However three defeats have followed without any goals. A win did come over Caersws in the League Cup. Like Newtown new it is a new squad, and Powell will be hoping they can click this weekend.

LAST SEASON

Last season threw up some cracking Mid Wales derbies.

The first one wasn't the most exciting of the four games. There were virtually no chances all game, before Kurtis March turned a cross in the last minute to hand his side the boxing day win.

Days later on New Year's Eve the Robins began the game with 12 fit players. Injuries had hampered the Robins, and Shane Sutton was ruled out in the warm up.

However the Robins found themselves 2-1 going into stoppage time. The Robins hearts were broken by a last second Joe Clarke goal.

The second phase games belonged to Newtown, and they included 10 goals scored and one conceded.

Jason Oswell bagged his third hat-trick of the season in a 4-0 win over Park Avenue in March, including a 45 yard lob.

Then in the reverse fixture in the penultimate game of the season, Nick Rushton was the hat-trick man as the Robins blocked up a 6-1 victory.

PLAYED FOR BOTH

Players in both squads have turned out for both the Robins and Aber.

Newtown - Three of the current Newtown squad once pulled on a Green shirt.

Jamie Reed spent time on loan in Ceredigion in 2015/16 on loan from The New Saints, bagging 7 goals in 17 games.

Captain Craig Williams also spent two seasons at Park Avenue. Winger Craig Williams, who is currently out injured until next year, was signed from Aberystwyth Town in 2016.

Aberystwyth - Goalkeeper Chris Mullock became a fans favorite in 2013/14, making 22 appearances on loan from TNS.

He played a key part in helping the Robins secure a top six spot and a place in the play offs for the first time.

John McKenna, who signed for Aber in the summer is also a former Robin. The also joined the club on loan from TNS back in 2010, played 13 times.
