Untimely death of Club Stalwart

Roy Francis passes away at age of 72

roy_francisIt is with much sadness that Newtown Football Club announces the death of Club stalwart, Roy Francis at the age of 72 years.

Roy died during last night at Shrewsbury Hospice where he was receiving treatment for cancer, a cruel disease that he had been fighting for over 10 years.

Roy was well known at the Club where he has been an active volunteer for around 40 years, together with wife Fran, who worked in the Club’s tea hut for as many years. As well as the general maintenance work at the Club which Roy undertook every weekday morning with the other regular volunteers, Roy was also one of the Club Stewards who do an awful lot more for the community than simply work at Club games, and Roy was one of the most frequent to offer his services for carnivals, parades and road races etc.

Survived by wife, Fran, Roy has one daughter, Sam and one grandchild, Dylan to whom the Club’s Board of Directors send their deepest condolences and best wishes. Roy is also survived by his Mother, Sister and Brothers.

Roy and Fran were presented with an FAW Meritorious Service award at the League’s annual dinner in Aberystwyth in 2012 and were very honoured by the occasion.

A quiet, unassuming and gentle individual, Roy will be greatly missed at the Club, none more so than by another Club stalwart, Dave Rowlands who gave a lot of support to Roy and Fran since Roy had been incapacitated.
