Newtown Under 14's

Sunday 14th September, 2014

Newtown Academy U14s got their new campaign off to a strong start with a commanding 4 - 2 victory away at Colwyn Bay.

After a sluggish start which saw the Academy league new boys take an early 1-0 win the young Robins quickly found their feet to cancel out the goal 10 minutes later. A mistake at the back allowed Midfield dynamo Tom Halliday nip in and cheekily lob the Colwyn Bay keeper. Almost immediately from the restart Newtown caught the opposition napping with their effective counter attacking style of play. Good build up play involving Tom Halliday, Ceri Powell and Dino Georgiou allowed Tim Whittingham to expertly slip the ball into Tunahan Onghun who cooly buried the ball into the roof of the net.

Despite Newtown having most of the possession Colwyn Bay were not going down without a fight and got their reward just minutes before half time. A relatively tame shot took a horrible bobble to leave the Robins keeper stranded making it 2-2.

Manager Sam Lawrence ran the changes at half time and they seemed to have the desired affect. 7 minutes into the second half. Newtown once again had Colwyn Bay's defence undone with their quick passing a neat through ball was latched onto by Whittingham who slid the ball past the on coming keeper. 3-2.

Tim Whittingham wrapped the game up nicely 5 minutes later with a mirror image goal of his first to make it 4 -2. Tim could have had his hat trick after a thunderous drive outside the box only to see the ball crash against the cross bar. There were some nervy moments towards the end of the game with a goal mouth scramble in the Newtown goal area leading to a great clearance of the line by debutant Rhys Owen drafted up from the U13s for this game.

The boys can be proud of how they played and look to continue this form when they take on Rhyl.
