Community
Our Vision
At Newtown AFC, our vision is to use football as a powerful tool to connect, inspire and support our community. We believe a football club should be more than a place where matches are played — it should be a hub that brings people together, creates opportunities and improves lives.
Through our community programme, we aim to ensure that everyone in the Newtown area, regardless of age, background or ability, has the chance to experience the positive impact that sport and community engagement can bring.
Football speaks a universal language, and we want to use that language to build stronger connections, support wellbeing and create inclusive opportunities for people across Powys and the surrounding communities.
Our Goals
Increase Access to Sport: We are committed to breaking down barriers to participation by creating opportunities for people from all backgrounds, particularly those from lower socioeconomic communities, to access sport and physical activity.
Strengthen Community Connections: Through projects like Newtown Christmas Together, we aim to bring people of different generations and backgrounds together, strengthening relationships and building a more connected community.
Support Health and Wellbeing: Initiatives such as Newtown Side by Side focus on promoting mental health awareness and wellbeing, using football and shared activity as a safe and positive way to start important conversations.
Engage and Inspire Young People: By working with over 18 local schools, we are committed to supporting young people through sport, education and personal development opportunities that encourage confidence, teamwork and aspiration.
Create Lasting Community Impact: Our goal is not just to run programmes, but to create sustainable projects that deliver long-term benefits for the community and strengthen the role of Newtown AFC as a trusted local institution.
Our Impact So Far
Since the launch of the Newtown AFC Community Programme, we have been proud to deliver projects that create real and meaningful impact across the local area. By working closely with schools, community groups and partners, the club has continued to strengthen its role as a positive force within the community.
Working with Local Schools: Education has been a key focus of our work. We have already engaged with over 18 local schools, delivering sessions that use football as a platform to support physical activity, personal development and wellbeing among young people. Through school visits, activity sessions and collaborative programmes, we aim to create opportunities that inspire students, encourage participation in sport and build stronger connections between the club and the next generation of supporters.
Newtown AFC 150th Anniversary Community Project
As part of the club’s historic 150th anniversary, we delivered a community initiative focused on improving access to sport for individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The project aimed to remove barriers to participation while encouraging more people within the community to take part in both competitive and recreational sport. The programme celebrated the club’s rich history while ensuring that the benefits of sport and physical activity were accessible to everyone in the community.
Newtown Christmas Together
Newtown Christmas Together was designed to bring people closer during the festive period by promoting intergenerational collaboration and community connection.
The programme created opportunities for people of all ages to come together through inclusive activities, while also ensuring that individuals and families who may face barriers to participation could feel part of the community during an important time of year.
Newtown Side by Side: Stronger Together - Mental Health & Wellbeing
Our newest initiative, Newtown Side by Side, focuses on mental health and well-being within the community. The programme aims to use football as a familiar and trusted environment to encourage open conversations, promote positive wellbeing and provide support through shared activity.
Through partnerships with schools, community groups and matchday engagement, the project will help raise awareness around mental health while building supportive spaces where people feel comfortable talking and connecting with others.
Soccer Camps
Our Newtown AFC Soccer Camps provide a fun, safe and engaging environment for young players to develop their football skills while building confidence, friendships and a love for the game.
Running most school half-terms from 9:00am to 3:00pm, the camps are designed to combine skill development, small-sided games and fun competitions, giving players the chance to learn and improve while enjoying the social side of football.
Over the past few years, our camps have grown significantly in popularity, regularly welcoming more than 90 attendees in a day. The sessions provide a fantastic opportunity for young people to stay active during school holidays, meet new friends and develop both on and off the pitch.
Delivered by experienced coaches in a safe, inclusive and supportive environment, our Soccer Camps are a great way for players of all abilities to enjoy football while learning new skills and building confidence.
Mini & Junior Robins
Our Mini and Junior Robins programme is designed to give young players aged 4 to 7 the best possible introduction to football in a fun, safe and high-quality learning environment. This phase focuses on building the core fundamentals of the game, helping young players develop their basic technical skills, coordination and confidence through engaging and enjoyable sessions.
As part of the wider Newtown AFC Academy pathway, the programme reflects our mission of becoming the most professional and productive academy programme in Wales. Sessions are delivered with a player-centred approach, ensuring every child has the opportunity to learn, express themselves and develop a love for the game.
Our coaching philosophy focuses on helping players become comfortable with the ball, encouraging creativity, decision-making and teamwork from an early age. Alongside football development, we aim to help young players build confidence, communication skills and positive behaviours, creating a strong foundation both on and off the pitch.
The Mini and Junior Robins programme also serves as an important pathway into the Newtown AFC Academy.
Many players who have attended the programme in recent years have progressed into our academy setup when reaching Under 8 level, demonstrating the strength of the development pathway available at the club.
Through high-quality coaching and a supportive environment, the Mini and Junior Robins programme ensures that every young player begins their football journey with the right foundations to develop and thrive.
