A good crowed turned out to watch the CWFA youth cup first round at Latham Park this evening with both Newtown and visitors Aberystwyth battling it out for a place in the second Round. Newtown started the game with a 3 absentees through suspension.
Aberystwyth start bright with interlinking play down the right wing which draws a foul resulting in a free kick from 25 yards on 8 minutes. The free kick was converted with a curling effort into the top right corner of the home sides goal.
On 20 minutes, Robins forward Jamie Evans rounded Aber’s keeper out on the left flank as a loose ball over top was contested by both with no end result for Newtown. The ball was played inside and a weak effort from Xavier Matisse failed to threaten. Aber created a handful of chances with Lewis Jones making a couple of good saves to keep town in the game. However Lewis’ efforts were in vain ten minutes before half-time as Aber doubled their lead with a strike from 25 yards off the left wing into the far right bottom corner. The hosts started to created chances leading up to half time with a couple of counter attacks down the left wing, one of which was a deep cross-come shot effort from Wozencraft which almost crept into the far top corner.
The second half started with the visitors on top hitting the post twice within the first 15 minutes. Newtown kept the ball moving, maintaining a good spell of possession trying to break down and penetrate Aber’s backline to no avail. The third goal for Aberystwyth was scored on the 70th minute with a low shot creeping underneath Lewis Jones who was otherwise faultless all night.
The game was rounded off in the final minutes as Aber added a fourth ending a disappointing night for the young robins.
