Newtown AFC start their festivities campaign with a convincing 0-2 win away to Aberystwyth Town in the JD Welsh Premier League.
A first half penalty scored by Steve Leslie followed by a second period goal from Nick Rushton was enough to take three points away from Park Avenue.
The Robin’s 9th victory of the league season now puts them five points clear away from Aberystwyth in 5th place as the reds hope to finish in the top 6 for when the league splits into two in January.
Three matches remain for the Robins before they can be sure of sealing a top 6 finish or not.
Newtown manager Chris Hughes stuck with the exact starting line-up he used from last Saturday’s draw at home to Carmarthen Town (1-1).
The match started off very well for the visitors when Hughes’ group created their first attack of the game within the opening minute when Nick Rushton went through one on one but the Seasiders’ goalkeeper made a great save to keep it out.
After quarter of an hour into the game, the match started to die down with Newtown looking the better side in terms of chances.
Aberystwyth started to get more involved when the match had gone 26 minutes in when Matthew Jones tested Dave Jones with a curling free kick before Ryan Wollacott hit the rebound over the bar.
But Newtown responded to M. Jones’ threat as Rushton went for goal again by picking up a long throw in from Alex Fletcher but Terry McCormick saved well to keep it all square.
Three minutes followed and Newtown broke the deadlock after 37 minutes as Steve Leslie slotted home from the penalty spot.
It was very close to being a two goal lead before the half time break when Neil Mitchell fancied a pop at goal but McCormick once more produced a pivotal save to give hope for the hosts in the second half.
The Seasiders looked to have been inspired from their team talk during the interval with a 56th minute opportunity when Ashley Ruane delivered a great ball into the Newtown box but luckily Ryan Edwards skied the ball over the bar.
Six minutes later and Newtown had looked to have put the game to bed as Rushton scored for the second consecutive game by finding the bottom corner with a fine finish inside the area.
The Robins looked to have controlled the game for the next ten minutes after Rushton’s goal as the Seasiders were struggling to create any opportunities.
But within in the last 15-10 minutes, Aber started to scare Newtown with a couple of comeback attempts.
The first one coming from Ruane who headed the ball just a whisker past the post after collecting a superb cross from M. Jones.
Not long after saw Geoff Kellaway strike the post after cutting inside and firing a dangerous low effort.
The reds were able to finish the game with a clean sheet for Dave Jones sealing a late Christmas present for the fans ahead of the reverse fixture this Sunday (Dec 29).
