Recap

The Robins bow out of the Nathaniel MG Cup for another season after a 1-0 defeat at Cambrian & Clydach on Tuesday night.

A 75th minute goal from the host’s Corey Shepherd proved the winning goal of the tie on what was a very cold night in Welsh football.

Unfortunately our Robins group had no answer to Cambrian and Clydach taking the lead with just 15 minutes left on the clock.

The match

Robins boss Chris Hughes made six changes to the squad that held a draw last Saturday against The New Saints in the JD Welsh Premier League.

Jack Perry took over from Dave Jones in-between the sticks while Sam Phillips, Tom Goodwin, Steve Leslie, Jake Cook and skipper Craig Williams were named in the starting line-up.

The likes of Jones, Callum Roberts, Jay Denny, Neil Mitchell, Luke Boundford and Ethan Jones took a step back from the starting 11.

It was a very cold Clydach Vale setting as the football season starts to enter the winter phase.

The first minutes on the board saw both sides eager to get the ball rolling, the 12th minute saw Phillips try an audacious shot from a fair distance which ended up striking the post. The first real opportunity of the game.

Cambrian responded very quickly 60 seconds later as an on target shot had to be tipped over the bar by Perry to keep it all square.

Phillips had a lot of involvement to begin with and just before the 20th minute mark – Phillips flew through the field playing the ball forward to Joe Kenton but Kenton’s angle was too tight to produce a scoreline change.

Many moments of the first half had the visitors look comfortable with their control on the game by simply pressing and pressing against their opponents where a goal looked to be just around the corner.

Seven minutes before the interval and Leslie went for goal after a collecting a fine through ball but skied the ball over the target.

Seconds later and Leslie was at it again, this time with his effort taking a deflection for the ball to go behind for a corner.

The last opportunity of the first half had Leslie fire his shot over after picking up a rebound from a dangerous free kick. Accuracy just didn’t want to be on his side in the first 45.

Cambrian started the second half well when the game was four minutes after the halftime break as the hosts had their shot just over the bar, alerting the Robins that they are hungry to score.

Phillips was at it again nine minutes later when his shot was tipped round the post before Kieran Mills-Evans’ header just went over the bar.

With just over 20 minutes left on the clock, the battle between the two sides started to get a bit scrappy as a place to the next round of the Welsh League Cup was on the line.

But Cambrian started to take in charge of the battle with 15 minutes still to play when Shepherd put them in front by breaking the deadlock after the Robins failed to clear the ball.

Newtown had to stay focused to avoid a cup upset but the one and final chance they could produce saw a free kick come to nothing.

However, Hughes’ men failed to respond as the full time whistle wrapped up a long night for the Welsh Premier League side.
