Newtown 4 – 2 Denbigh Town

A Gregg Draper doubled helped Newtown cement their place in the top 4 but needed a resolute second half performance to take the points. Newtown flew out of the blocks and in their first attack, Draper smashed Elijah Beattie’s cross bar but didn’t have to wait long for his first goal as on the 7th minute mark good play found Draper free and the experienced striker made no mistakes firing pass the keeper.

Newtown soon doubled their lead inside the first 10 minutes, again good press in the Denbigh half saw Jamie Hyne find room and his low effort squeezed into the bottom corner.

The best goal of the day came on the 16th minutes, Aidan Mccann found space 35 yards in the middle of the pitch and he unleashed a rocket of a drive which found Beattie’s top corner.

With Newtown on top Draper saw his header saved but as Denbigh grew into the game, Nathan Brown gave Newtown a warning firing against Dave Jones post.

The visitors were back into the game 5 minutes into the second half as Newtown looked for the flag as Alfie Vaughan got the final touch and with 20 minutes remaining a Denbigh free kick smashed the Newtown bar, Denbigh were able to keep the ball alive and Bobby Beaumont got the final touch.

With the visitors on top and spaces at the back, a smart Beattie save from Tom Jones kept the game alive but home nerves were put to bed with a few minutes remaining as Jones did well and his low cross was poked home for Drapers second of the afternoon. A last ditch Denbigh tackle denied Draper his hat trick from a Devon Torry centre and Dave Jones saved well in the closing stages.
