PLAYER INTERVIEW – AARON WILLIAMS

We are delighted to share with you a question and answer session with our striker, Aaron Williams. Since joining the Robins, it is fair to say that Aaron has become a firm fan favourite due to his excellent goal scoring exploits. With Aaron starting on the goal scoring trail again already this season, we thought that we would take the opportunity to speak to him and find out more about his time with us since he joined and his hopes for the future.

Question 1: When you joined Newtown in 2021, it was the first time in your career that you had played in Welsh football. What was it that made you switch to Welsh football and what was it that attracted you to join Newtown?

“I received several offers throughout the summer of 2021, but when I was contacted by Shane Sutton and then by the gaffer, I was instantly interested in the opportunity. When the gaffer spoke to me about the different opportunities in the Cymru Premier League, such as playing in Europe, that was what made my mind up! I had never had the chance to travel around Europe to play football before, so I couldn’t wait to grab the opportunity with both hands”

Question 2: You had a great first season with us and scored some important goals. What was your favourite out of all the goals you scored for us last season?

“Every goal I scored last season played a big part to what we achieved as a team! So, I don’t have a favourite goal as every goal is important! Most were penalties too” (laughs)

Question 3: We enjoyed an amazing adventure in European football at the start of this season, can you tell us about how it felt for you on a personal level to play in Europe?

“To play in Europe is not what every footballer can say they have achieved throughout their career, so to have that on my career is something I am very proud of and very thankful for! What we did earlier this season as a team, from the players to everyone behind the scenes was massive! Everybody played a major part in it, which you can see from the celebrations after beating Havnar Bóltfelag! Then, to go and play in Slovakia against FC Spartak Trnava, a club with loads of history in the game was unbelievable! To experience the atmosphere during the game and the reception and respect their fans showed us is something that I have never felt before and will always remember”

Question 4: You have started this season in fine form in front of goal, do you set yourself a target of how many goals you want to score at the start of a new season?

“I have started ok this season, but with the chances the team have created for me, I feel like I should be on more than I am currently on. I never set targets for myself, I know most strikers do, but it is something that I have never really done. As long as we do well as a team and I perform well for the team, that is the main target”

Question 5: What are your hopes for our club this season, what do you think we can achieve?

“Qualifying for Europe is always a target for us and with the quality we have throughout the whole squad, it is something we should always set out to achieve”

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Aaron for talking to us and we look forward to watching him throughout the rest of this season.
