George Hughes joined Newtown in July 2020 having previous had a loan spell at the club in 2019 from parent club Shrewsbury Town. George rose through the youth ranks at Shrewsbury Town. He had his first loan moves in 2017 with a month long stay at Colwyn Bay, which was followed by a spell with Clitheroe later in the season and a loan spell with Stalybridge Celtic at the start of the 2018/19 season. He has featured for the Shrewsbury Town first team in 2018 coming on as a second half substitute in the CheckaTrade game with West Bromwich Albion.

Hughes departed Shrewsbury Town on a permanent transfer to Airbus UK in July 2019 before rejoining the Robin on a free transfer for the begining of the 2020/21 season.
