A Catch Up With The Gaffer

On the eve of the first team squad travelling over to Northern Ireland to play a pre-season game against the NIFL Premiership Champions, Linfield, we had a brief chat with manager Chris Hughes so that he couldprovide an update on how things are going thus far in pre-season and of course to find out his reaction on the Europa Conference League draw where we will take on the Faroese club, HB Tórshavn.

He firstly spoke about how he pleased he was for the club to be involved in European competition for a second successive season.

“We had a superb 2021/2022 Cymru Premier League campaign, and I know I am biased, but I believe that we fully deserve our chance to play in the Europa Conference League once more, after all, we finished in third place in the Cymru Premier League last season which is a brilliant achievement”

Chris added – “we have now been back in training for several weeks and preparation is going well, and of course we now look forward to the game against Linfield which will aid our preparation even further in the build up to the first leg of the tie against HB”

Talking of our Europa Conference League First Qualifying Round opponents, we then asked Chris as to what he knew about HB Tórshavn.

“We know that we are in for a tough two games against HB, they are a good team who have several current Faroese international players in their squad – they are currently in season, and we have been able to watch footage of their recent games, and I must thank the FAW Analysis team for the help they have provided with this”

The final question we asked Chris was what approach he would be taking for the first leg in the Faroe Islands, to which he gave this reaction:

We know that we are in for a tough first leg, but we will prepare the right way and approach the game with confidence, looking to impose our style of play on our opponents, and just like any game of football, we will go with the intention of winning the game”

We thank Chris for taking the time out of his busy schedule to provide us with his thoughts. All at Newtown AFC wish him and the lads well as they carry on with their preparations for that all important first leg in the Faroes Islands.
