Newtown AFC concede their 2nd straight defeat in the Welsh Premier League after a 5-0 defeat at Park Hall on Friday night.
After wins in their first 3 home friendlies, Newtown’s first away friendly saw them make it four in a row with a 3-0 win away to Hallmark Security League Division 1 South side FC Oswestry Town at Park Hall Stadium, Oswestry on Saturday.
Meanwhile, FC Oswestry had gone into the game on the back of a 2-1 home win over Llanfair United in their opening friendly and a 4-1 away win over Berriew on 14th July.
After a scoreless first half which had seen not very many serious clear-cut chances for either side but Oswestry battle well, Newtown eventually took the lead in the 67th minute when Ben Bailey’s long cross-field ball over the top from left to right found Nick Rushton who took a touch before running down the line and into the box before crossing to the post where, after a scramble, the ball fell to Jay Denny who fired his left foot shot from about a yard into the centre of Oswestry keeper Louis Mackin’s net.
It was 2-0 in the 71st minute when half time sub Joe Kenton ran down the left and cut inside past one man and sent a low through ball down the left line to Sam Phillips, who ran on to the byeline before crossing low for Rushton to fire his first time left foot shot from 6 yards through Mackin’s legs into the keeper’s right hand corner.
It was 3-0 in the 74th minute when Callum Roberts ran down the left and beat one man on his way to the byeline before cutting the ball back low to Phillips, whose right foot shot from 18 yards was blocked by a defender before the ball rebounded to Phillips who fired his right foot shot from 18 yards in off the underside of the bar into Mackin’s top right hand corner.
Both sides made substitutions at half time and at regular intervals during the second half but it was a good work-out for both sides in the rather warm conditions.
Oswestry continued to battle well during the second half and they certainly did not deserve to lose by 3-0 against their more illustrious opponents.
